Avatar requirements?

I'm trying to set a custom avatar (uploaded elsewhere) but I get constant errors about my file being too large or not being an avatar.

I can't find any requirements using the search function but I noticed existing avatars are 100x100 or 128x128 pixels. I tried both but still no go.

What are the requirements for a custom avatar?
