Upgraded to V2 about music files?
« on: February 16, 2019, 11:49:02 PM »
HI, I'm 2 weeks into using RDJ v2 after over a year with RDJ 1.82.
Background, back when I was ripping all my music CDs, it was important to me to have a full CD of music with the same folder/file structure.  However as a Live DJ/Host of 2 hour set, that is mostly top 40 hits, the same structure isn't necessary for my current needs.

Question:  Which do you prefer a structured folder ie, artist / album / songs  or even artist / songs, or maybe by genre?
  OR
maybe All songs in one folder, and since they are cataloged with RDJ DB the need for structure lots of folder/files isn't necessary, maybe a few general subcategory folders for minor grouping but essentially depending on RDJ's search ability to pick music for playing.

Initially, with 1.82 I was structured, but as I started acquiring more current tracks and classics to fill holes, I got behind on moving the new additions to correct folders. Instead, I created temp folder and moved the new music there and added to DB, with the plan of moving later to an appropriate folder.  1.82 I had about 2/3 of the music in structured folders, and the later new additions in the temp folder.  As time went on I didn't see much of a need to move those new files, the RDJ DB and search were mostly adequate for my needs.

Are there any performance advantages of structured vs one or several giant folders?
Or other factors I need to consider?

Me too I have divited on years and genre, but this was at the beginning. Now I have quite a mess (I counted 91 folders, each one containing from 100 to 400 tracks or more) :bash: But I can deal with it  :hihi:

I have the bulk of my music library in one file, and the specialty stuff are in separate files (like Christmas, Halloween, Patriotic, etc.)

The problem having all the music file in just one bulk file is that if you ad some tracks it will take a lot of time scanning all the songs already present in the db (it depends on how many you have, of course).

YAY..  FINALLY a real discussion with good thoughts!!!

Chip is right, I am adding a lot of music each week to the db just so I can do a set up to 8 sets per week. I have temp holding folders just so I can quickly add to DB but in 2 months time unless I take the time to move them to the more structured layout  ie rock/ 70s/80s/90s etc those holding folders quickly become 1000-1500 tracks. SO every month or every other month I try to spend time moving tracks.

ONE HUGE PROBLEM, I would like to hear how some might have sorted things to handle.  As a live show host/dj, sometimes if things are slow during a show, ie, no chat, no requests, I might change from my pre-planned play list and do on the fly choices.  So how do you keep tracks like top 100 rock hits for past 5 years or 10 so those songs not lost and buried in big database?   Personally, I have resorted to lists.  BTW that would be a nice feature to be able to create lists with notes and mic things you might say, but have click and play links for songs.
