Voice Tracking

Hi Guys,

I'm desperately trying to learn how to Voice Track in Radio DJ 2, but I really can't work it out.

The explanations online don't seem to work for me - Jhonny's page doesn't work for me and throws a 404.

Bare in mind, I've come from softwares such as Myriad where you do it in a segue editor, and in Zetta - so I imagine this is going to be totally different for me.

IF anyone can either link me to a tutorial or just describe it to me, that'd be really helpful!

look for Clicking on the red dot makes it possible to record a voice track.

There are so many things I really like about RDJ, but voice-tracking is still a feature that is cumbersome and will hopefully become better in future builds (ie. create rotations that include 'blanks' for voice tracks to be recorded onto; and skipped if not recorded. And the ability to segue by sliding VT over outro and intro of the songs on either side).

Just my 2 cents on Voice Tracking option. You could use Drop Box and set up folders for days of the week and hours of the day. The set up events calling for a specific file from a Drop Box folder. The files could be imported into RDJ as a "Variable Duration File" this way when the file is changed in Drop box it will play the updated file in RDJ. I know it is not a perfect solution and will take some thought and effort but once done it might solve your issue...Like I said it is just my 2 cents :)

I think I answered this in a another thread - because VTs were something I had to figure out in RDJ. My previous experience was in Pro software like WideOrbit and RCS.
RDJ is bit clunky but here's what you do.

Basics - RDJ VTs module is INSIDE PLAYLIST EDITOR /// audio type MUST be SWEEPER // songs MUST have an intro marked in cue editor. "0" sec intro and RDJ won't load a VT over it.

1. Option A -record your audio in an external editor and copy to RDJ folder. IMPORT the files as SWEEPER, file type MUST BE SWEEPER for RDJ VT to work.

Option B - record inside RDJ Playlist editor if you are capable of hearing your sound card with headphones on ( I can't because I use virtual cables - so record in an editor.)

Now that you have recorded the track - you have to SAVE IT - use the small disc icon. Then IMPORT it - same as any other import - make a VT category under sweepers. The file TYPE MUST be SWEEEPER - if not, it just won't work. Period.

2. Now you have recorded tracks - and they are imported. Add songs in your Playlist Builder. On the FAR RIGHT of the song info the COLUMN SWEEPER needs to be double clicked. It opens a large window listing ALL sweepers. Now that's not what you want. So, filter down to your correct category where you have your VTs. Find the proper VT cut and select (highlight it) At the BOTTOM you have 3 choices START, INTRO, END to place your VT. Start means your track starts at the song start and ends as the song keeps going. A 6 sec VT on a 12sec intro will start at :00 and end at :06 seconds while the song plays. (I like this best as 3 sec sweeper IDs on 25 sec intros sound like crap.) If you KNOW your intro time is set perfectly in the CUE EDITOR and you want to HIT the vocal post - use INTRO. The VT will auto backtime to the vocal post (or whatever time is the intro time.) The END choice is obvious as it plays at the end cue of your song. Scary choice as I haven't really had luck with it.

Now, the next step is to hit the ADD button to finalise your choice. You'll see the element listed now in your playlist editor, as well you can see the type of insert choice you made (start, intro, end).

SAVE your playlist!!!

VT's only work with playlist editor.

If you on a regular basis, use VTs - numbering/naming your tracks correctly is key. You could end up with a bunch of "VT-1" - I delete previous VT sessions before doing a new one.

Hi, New to RDJ.
Can you please tell me if this is still the right voicetracking procedure for the current version, or otherwise point me to a more up to date link?
Also if I'm only playing RDJ on a random Autodj rotation will these voicetracks stick to the track the the subsequent times the track is played until such time as I remove them, as this is what I want.....sorry for the newby questions but I tried a link to DJ Jhonny site but it must be an old link.
Any help appreciated
cheers,
Geoff

If that's what you want to do, try recording the tracks as sweepers, then link the sweeper to the individual music file. That's a quick and dirty way to do it. I'm sure there are better ways but it's late and my brain is malfunctioning!

ok, the problem I am having now is that the pop up voice recorder box (in Playlist Builder) does not record, ie nothing happens when I click on the record button. No doubt a setting i have overlooked I think, what is supposed to show up in the second white dropdown bar? pic below
Also, do I have to create a playlist of all my tracks in order to attach sweepers or VT? Or can this just be done on the rotation I'm using?

Edit:...I think the answer to my last Question may be to use a "New Rotation Playlist"....?

Have you installed the two lame files into your Plugins/Encoder file? They have to be there in order for the recorder to work.

Well I changed the name of the encoders folder, then changed it back again and voila, the recorder started to work!
one problem solved, many more to try and understand how to make voice track play with a music file. I'm obviously doing something wrong as I havent succeeded yet. I changed my rotation to include sweepers but it still shows no sweepers or voicetracks on the main panel. Do I need to create and save a new rotation, or do I have to play from a playlist. Totally confused tonight. Is there a recommended youtube I might be able to follow?.... try again tomorrow.

Hi Charlie,
So long as the playlist is saved the voice track info will remain intact for further plays, is that correct?
regards,
Geoff

A voice track is just another audio file, so if you put it in your playlist, then if it's still a valid file, rdj will play it.

You can also drag voice tracks into the current playlist loaded by a rotation...
Like if you have to use the toilet but you want your listeners to think you are still in the studio
