Stream Licensing Gone

Its been brought to my attention that StreamLicensing.com the people who licence online stations in the USA has gone out of business.

I wonder how many stations that is likely to affect I have no idea. Its certainly a bad time to be a radio station on the Internet...

Not many stations are going to be able to pay the fees that Live365 appear to charge.

Live365 went out of business last year, then reopened again. How soon until they go under again.

Yes, the world is waking up to the need to make money again, nothing is free, except RadioDJ...

My last check with Stream Licensing was that they had 800+ stations listed. TheElle.US left a little over a year ago because we felt something wasn't right, at that time there were approximately 1200+ stations listed.

Just contacted Live365 about there ASCAP relationship-(thanks stevewa). Waiting for there response.

I remember back in the day when its was about the tunes, not the corporate playlist or the cash. Must be getting old.

Just come across this article from a users perspective of how it all went wrong for him...

It makes for an eye opening read for anyone who paid stream licensing

It looks interesting and frustrating... I'm willing now to ask the same question to our local Siae/SCF. I will not be surprised to get a similar answer...  :'(

StreamLicensing has been continuing to bill me and charge the credit card I have on-file with them. They are not responding to emails, phone calls, text messages. I've reported them to the BBB and are hoping they refund the money they stole from me.

If your in the UK you can use PRS for Music - LOML - Pricing from  £142 + VAT for a 12 month period.

If anyone wants details of the finer clauses within LOML (formerly LOEL) I can advise. :)

So glad I don't do radio streaming (these days) having just seen the .pdf from PRS....

WOW its expensive.

PPL used be right sticks in the mud when it came to the music licence for a venue I used to be MC at. The bill went up by £20 one year I heard the club secretary swear at the committee meeting....

A pub chain in the UK got rid of music in all their pubs in the 90s after a row with PPL & PRS.

I daren't say what I really think about these royalty collection agencies.  >:D

You my friend are NOT alone.... I've heard Stream Licencing described as "crooks" on another forum.

There are ways to minimise the cost. Main one is that the rights extend to all domains directly under the control of the licensee, meaning that if you and I, for example, teamed up and I gave you 'control' of my domain then we can exist as two channels under the same rights agreement, meaning our hypothetical £140 splits between us and any others who chose to join in.

We on TheThursdayNightShow don't pay LOML on every DJ, who also simulcast quite frequently. ;)

I don't have enough listeners to justify paying the big time license fees, that having been said, I don't want to become the posterchild for being sued by BMG, ASCAP and SESAC! I signed up for the ad-supported version of Live365 and inserted them into my rotation - they are mostly PSAs instead of paid ads at this point. It's a preventative measure I don't likely need to take for my audience (mostly my Mom) but I get as a bonus another streaming service as part of the 1,500 TLH deal!
