My VPS host have messaged me saying that they're transferring me over to a new server at some point today. So if my website isn't available don't worry it'll be back when its back.

SIGH! You may have noticed my website is off line I can only but apologise

It appears I broke the whole thing while trying to fix a problem despite reading through several tutorials from the Vesta CP forums.

Its a self managed VPS so the hosting company aren't even remotely interested in getting it back to where it was they've given me a load of BLURB that I don't really understand.

So if my website is missing in action for a few days its because I'm weighing up my options.

I hate Linux Tutorials on forums. 9 times out of ten they make the problem 100 times worse.

Everything has gone wrong i don't have Webmin access & SFTP won't work either. I'm done.

I'm up a creek without a paddle... The VPS mystery hasn't been solved. whatever I did certainly F***ed it.

There are files missing from the backups of my WordPress site which I only found out when I went to try and install my site on a local webserver.

I'm screwed, I'm confused, I'm stressed, I'm OUT OF MY DEPTH!

I'm about to update the ticket with the hosting company and tell them to stop the VPS and use the $30 credit in my account for charity.

I'm getting Frustrated and ticked off now my VPS host seem to be ignoring me so If there's no reply to my latest ticket by tomorrow I'm telling them where to stick the VPS.

I have a backup of my website (I hope) and will be looking at options for hosting next week.

Its not the web serve that's the issue its something to do with the VPS control panel (Vesta) giving 500 errors Some update borked it and they (the VPS hosting company) haven't been able to get to the bottom of it, they're helping me out as a favour.

I'm hoping that they can at least restore a backup of the VPS taken a few months back. From there I should be able to restore databases etc...
I'm hoping to have a firm answer as to what's happening later as I've just updated the ticket to enquire what's happening

sorry, I was trying to make the point, that you could try to use the web archive collection to backup all your website pages & content before you gave up and threw away the vps and all your years of effort.

do you have root access to the VPS via a ssh terminal login?

I can only access SSH from my deceased husbands PC which is not hooked up right now.

I was trying to run a command via SSH that got me into trouble so many BAD Linux tutorials out there anyway the Vesta Control panel is throwing 500 errors and I have no way of fixing it. Beyond my programming skills.

I have a backup of my site or at least an .sql file saying backup. I'm sure i will get this issue resolved

I tried learning Linux and ultimately I failed.

Well if you don't get it resolved, connect tech monkeys pc so you have ssh access the private msg me so we can look at the log files for the web publishing service, either Apache or Nginx, to determine why your website won't load

Its back online with a few teething problems which I'm hoping to be able to resolve somehow.

MariaDB doesn't appear to want to start and I have absolutely zero idea how to make it work again.

This is giving me gas... My programming skills are extremely limited.

If it can't be solved my mouse may have to hover over the "request cancellation" button.

P.S: It also appear my https cert has ran out and I have no idea how to update that or even where it is on the server .

good news to start.

do you have root access via ssh now?
what do the MariaDB log files say when it tries to start up?
is the MariaDB log file have today's timestamp on it?

your ssl cert is issued by Let's Encrypt.
in a terminal over ssh, type

letsencrypt renew &> /etc/letsencrypt/le_renewal_results.txt

that will attempt to renew the certif and write the results of the attempt to that text file, so if you have problems, you can copy & paste the results of that txt file for troubleshooting

It was backonline then I went to update some plugins and it went boom again so i give up.

it appears I've lost a lot of work (the last backup(s) weren't taken properly) Looking for another wordpress backup tool as a result any how its back again but for how long who knows.

I get errors when I try and run that line in putty. Its not wanting to update with that command.

Why is it 9 times out of 10 when I'm given some form of solution its always the wrong one that's what got me into this mess in the first place. Badly written Linux tutorials is what screwed over my PC and forced me onto Windows again.
