SQL Quandry
« on: May 22, 2020, 07:23:38 PM »
I've reset the new computer back to its bare stripped down Windows 10 without the bloatware.

Since reinstalling MariaDB its actively refuses to let me connect to the MySQL server from my usual desktop yet ports and the program are ticked in windows Firewall. (Its playing silly beggars with FTP but that's another matter)

I know the fix is probably simple but I cannot find a tutorial on Google that isn't Linux related even though Windows 10 formed part of my searches.

Any Ideas of links to tutorials?

Hi Gary,

the tutorial is for Windows and Linux.
It looks like that MariaDB rejects the connection from IP addresses
other than 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1'.
So the problem is inside 'my.ini' on Windows ('my.cnf' on Linux).
Only the names of the files are different between Windows and Linux.

So, edit you my.ini and follow this part of the tutorial:

Quote
Editing the Defaults File

Once you have located the defaults file, use a text editor to open the file and try to find lines like this under the [mysqld] section:

 [mysqld]
    ...
    skip-networking
    ...
    bind-address = <some ip-address>
    ...

(The lines may not be in this order, and the order doesn't matter.)

If you are able to locate these lines, make sure they are both commented out (prefaced with hash (#) characters), so that they look like this:

 [mysqld]
    ...
    #skip-networking
    ...
    #bind-address = <some ip-address>
    ...

(Again, the order of these lines don't matter)

Alternatively, just add the following lines at the end of your .my.cnf (notice that the file name starts with a dot) file in your home directory or alternative last in your /etc/my.cnf file.

[mysqld]
skip-networking=0
skip-bind-address

This works as one can have any number of mysqld sections.

Save the file and restart the mysqld daemon or service (see Starting and Stopping MariaDB).

I hope that will solve your problem... ;D

Its all well and good saying edit "this file" or "that file" I have no idea where these files live let alone to be able to edit them.

I'm pretty sure I set MariaDB up as I normally do so it baffling me why the ports aren't being seen they're forwarded in the router too.

And Code is hard for me to read on a quote box.

I understand you're trying to help but my dyslexia is getting in the way of reading properly today.

It's me again... :D

Ok, again in laymans terms as you said...
If MariaDB was installed together with xampp on drive C:, 'my.ini' is inside c:\xampp\mysql\bin\

If you downloaded MariaDB from the website and installed it, then the 'my.ini' is located
in C:\Program Files\MariaDB\bin

The easyiest way to solve that problem is:

edit the 'my.ini' with a text-editor and add the following lines at the end of your 'my.ini':

[mysqld]
skip-networking=0
skip-bind-address

After saving my.ini, restart the mysql service. If you don't know how,
restart the PC with MariaDB on.

But be aware, that then any IP can access MariaDB if username and password is known.

A) Its in the Data directory.
B) I try adding them two lines to the MariaDB my.ini file the server refuses to start take them lines back out it starts.

That hasn't helped.

Sorry, if there was misinformation :bash:
I 'm using the xampp version...

But now, you are able to edit the 'my.ini' at least.  ;D

Try this:

Edit the 'my.ini' again and look for a line like this:

bind-address = 127.0.0.1

or

bind-address = localhost

Add a # in front of this line, so the line looks like this:

#bind-address = 127.0.0.1

or

#bind-address = localhost

Save the file and restart the service or the PC.

That's how I did it on Linux.

There is no Bind address line in the my.ini file.
Code: [Select]
[mysqld]
datadir=C:/Program Files/MariaDB 10.4/data
port=3306
innodb-page-size=65536
innodb_buffer_pool_size=1912M
[client]
port=3306
plugin-dir=C:/Program Files/MariaDB 10.4/lib/plugin

I've just DITCHED Linux (Ubuntu Studio) after about 8 years because I couldn't get something working and every tutorial I followed made the matter worse.

It was fun when I had TechMonkey here to look at these issues for me because of my learning difficulties I have real trouble following things.

I've just reinstalled Maria DB

I can now connect to the database using the database setup tool from my PC but I can't get any webscripts to connect with it its frustrating me

I'm using XAMPP on Windows (MariaDB installed seperately) and its been a royal pain since I first tried it.

Ignore all that I was editing the wrong bleeding config file after all that. I'm right now PHEW!These things are sent to try us.

I am lucky you found the solution.

Else, it would have been a bit complicated to explain the next steps
I had in my mind. (Editing database/user rights in MariaDB...)
