Help with repeated artist back to back

Hi all,

I am new-ish to Radio DJ and so far loving it. I have one problem which I have not yet managed to solve. I've been days reading through topics and threads hoping not to repeat other peoples' problems but I have not yet managed to solve my issue :(

My issue is the following:

Radio DJ keeps playing a song by Sting - If You Love Somebody Set Them Free and right after it picks Craig David Ft. Sting - Rise & Fall.

I have similar issues with for example - Rudimental Ft. Macklemore & Jess Glynne - These Days and a couple songs after it plays Jess Glynne - Take Me Home.

I have the associated artists filled it correctly, I have enough songs in my library as in fact it tells me I have at least over 900 songs to select from during the live rotation. I have set Keep In Playlist to 1 to try and eliminate this issue too.

My rotation is set to Least Times Played - repeat rules is ticked too. Don't play artist is set to 60 mins too.

This is not the case where I have for example a Sting song, then a Sting Ft. some other artist - I have sorted this out by treating each artist individually. My issue is that I get 1 artist, then that same artist is featuring in another song and that song gets played right after or a few songs after :(

I have attached 5 images to show you my current set up. Could someone please help me?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, thanks for the attached though I had already seen and read all the info and still cannot find anything related to the problem I am having.

Is there anyone who could help?

Thanks!

RFU

It sees the first song as one artist and the second song as another artist.

Sting - If You Love Somebody Set Them Free and Craig David Ft. Sting - Rise & Fall it sees as a different artist. It sees the artist as Craig David, not Sting.

I would suggest you do what I do. Leave the artist name as the artist (Craig David) in the tag and change the song title in the tag to Rise & Fall Ft. Sting

You will have to delete the song and import it again after you make changes to the tag file. You could also make the changes using the track edit feature in RadioDJ but that doesn't make changes to the tag file and if you ever have to re-import your songs for whatever reason, you're back to square one. So it's better to make changes to the source and re-import it correctly.

That will get rid of any 'repeat' problems. And let's face it, if you're importing an entire album every song is not Ft. Sting

I agree with RFU.

That's what I did, I left the artist name as the artist in the tag and change the song title in the tag with the feat. artist and I never got back to back artist since.

Well, it's a workaround, but not a workable for many of us. Because it won't prevent back to back playing of "Paul McCartney" - "Ebony and Ivory ft Stevie Wonder" and "98 Degrees" - "True To Your Heart ft Stevie Wonder". That's where the artist seperation comes in, and in older versions it'd seperate the artistfield.

In newer versions, this has been replaced by the "associated artist" field, and if filled in correctly (and apparantly @TS it is) it shouldn't happen. I don't notice it in the last beta either, but previous versions it'd not always work as expected.

Maybe, if TS isn't using the last beta, it will be solved by migrating. Another option could be that TS is using the same database with different clients (RDJ instances). Then you'd have the chance that your queuelist table is overwritten and thus RDJ won't use the artist seperation correctly.

v2.0.2.0 beta has the "Update Associated Artists" feature and I use it extensively. Just list the artists on a song separated with a comma (no space like Paul McCartney,John Lennon) and it will not play either artist within the artist separation timeframe. Listing Beatles,McCartney,Lennon,Harris,Starr separates all of the Beatles solo and together. Upgrade to the beta version... I've been using it since that version came out and find it very stable.

Hi all,

Thank you for all your replies and sorry for replying so late as I was away from my PC over the last few days.

@RFU and @DJ Kazy Kevin - as @Calypso stated - changing the artist name from Craig David Ft. Sting to Craig David will not solve my problem as it is not the case of having the same artist and one of those songs has a featured artist (example one song - Michael Jackson - Bad and second song Michael Jackson Ft. Janet Jackson - Scream) - for that case I have done what you suggested and changed the second song to Michael Jackson - Scream Ft. Janet Jackson).

In this case I have Sting being the first song and Craig David Ft. Sting being the second song and not Sting Ft. Craig David. As seen in my pictures I have 'sting' inputted in associated artist field.

@Calypso and @Chip Douglas Mosley - I am using the latest Beta as seen in screenshot so I cannot understand why I keep having this issue :(

Thanks again!

RFU

How many tracks, and what variety do you have?
I've been using v1.8.2, which does not have the associated artist feature, for 4 years and I have never had the problem you're describing

I have over 1200 enabled songs which are currently active in my rotation. My rotation rules were posted above and I always have around 850 songs (according to Radio DJ) which are 'playable' based on my rules.

On another note, I re-updated the info for the song and re-imported it. So far it seems to have changed the sequence and is not getting played straight after If You Love Somebody Set Them Free. It is getting played 90 mins after which is fine.

I'll keep the thread updated.

Thanks!

Unfortunately I am still having issues with back to back artists:

After analysing history even further I found another situation:

Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight, the next song, Genesis - Hold On My Heart

As seen attached, associated artist fields are filled in correctly.

Please help!

Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for replying hehe

No I don't have any spaces, just:

phil collins,genesis and viceversa

This is how I have populated the associated_artists field - as such there is no separator file unless I am missing out on something

thanks!

Jhonny

settings_artists.txt  is the file with the separetors
