Apologies For the Spam

For some strange reason Spammers have homed in on this forum and its getting hard to keep them at bay. 

Since I logged on today I've possibly removed 400+ bad registrations.

I can only but apologise if the spam gets through but I'm not here all the time.

I'm doing what I can when I can during the week but I'm not online at weekends (Personal Choice)

Its Frustrating but I'm not giving them an inch if I see them I will delete them

Can't you block their ip address (if necessary, the country of origin), usually spam comes from one and the same person.
Or make sure new members have to be approved by the administrators.

Unfortunately I don't have access to Marius's servers I can only remove accounts that are known spammers...

Its FRUSTRATING me like I said I don't know why this particular group of spammers have zoned in on this forum.

Other than try and stop the registrations getting through there's not a lot more I can do.

Yes Marius does still visit but I think he's busy at the moment.

I've given him details of someone that may be able to help with the problem.

Its overwhelming me the amount of spam sign ups were getting daily.

there are several stop spam plugins for the simple machines platform, but Marius would need to install it, or give you the ability to install it.

I'm just wondering about Marius' health, and what happens to RadioDJ if something bad should happen to him...

AFAIK Stop Forum spam Plugin is installed it was installed a good few years ago after my suggestion there appears to be an issue that only Marius can fix I've given him the name of a contact at SFS and thats all I can do.

If Marius's health isn't great then we just wait and see what happens. I know how Marius feels when it comes to his hips mine are in constant pain... and that can sap my creativity.

Spammers have become a big problem since New Years. In a couple of groups I admin on Facebook I am refusing and blocking about 5 new members a day and deleting 20 to 30 fu :angel:ing videos. Plus porn messages on Instagram to my radio station profile. Not to mention all the  scammer profiles that try to add me every day, or post comments. No, I'm not interested in bitcoin, or boner pills, or Mma Makutsi's love potion, or your personal investment advisor, or the million other offers I get every day

The most effective way I was able to remove spam registrations on my board was by adding a question that has to be answered correctly before it completes the registration. For example, "What is the device we speak into, to record our voice?" Or, "Who invented radio?"  Any answer other than "microphone", or "Marconi", stalls the registration process. 

Adding a couple questions like that (one, or the other, is randomly presented during sign-up), decreased spam registrations 99.95% in my forum.  Good luck weeding out the degenerates!

It really becomes a frustration all that spam am used to quickly see if there are questions or facts that are interesting.
There must be a solution to this.
I don't care about a totally new forum (even if I have to register again
To Marius remedy an EU in place of RO  and a clean setup.

The easiest solution would be more moderators...
An alternative would be to write some code and check for first posts to see if multiple links are being posted and if so remove post, adding links to a list to also check against...
IP Banning isn't as effective if they're using masking.

Yes we could do with more Moderators but that's a job for Marius.


If I'm totally honest I'm still not over the death of my husband it was memory that sparked something on Friday so I took a few days away.

I updated the forum to the newest version and i will try to install some plugins to prevent this. Another problem is that some of my webhost's servers are since yesterday under DDOS attacks which causes some interruptions. Hopefully it get sorted soon.

Whatever you've done seems to have stopped the spammy signups for now
