Hmm, interesting...
I was considering trying Windows 10, but after hearing this, I think I will stay with Windows 7.   ;D

As long it doesn't update works great.  But you know m$, they always have something to update.  :D

PS: it seems that there is a method you can prevent background auto update: http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/
But again, being a new OS i'm not sure that is a good idea to disable updates.

Our Windows 10 box is still giving us cause for concern.

Sometimes it will slow down to the point the stream in RadioDJ starts behaving like a scratched record that's just been stopped.

We thought it was a hard drive problem removed the drive we thought was causing the problems and bang it still happens so I'm guessing it something to do with the update procedure.

Maybe one day Microsoft will get their act together ....  :bash: >:D

OK, thanks for the reply.

Any recommendations on the best streaming software to use?

  • RadioDJ 1.8
    Windows 10 Pro
Dell Optiplex 3010 (Core i3, 4GBs RAM, 7200RPM hard drive)
    MariaDB instead of MySQL
Streaming using some encoder plugin to shoutcheap
    LPFM station

I don't believe we are experiencing this issue at our station.  However, we are heavily automated (ran by volunteers)and hardly anyone monitors the station 24/7

Personally - I'd be surprised if it has anything to do with Physical system resources such as CPU, RAM, or Disk I/O -- unless you are running Win7/10 on a seriously old computer.  For the most part, now-a-days, most computer ship with WAY more horsepower then is actually needed by the OS. That's why most systems only hit 10-20% CPU load.

- RadioDJ isn't resource intensive.
- MYSQL is relatively light on resources (depending upon size of DB)
- Microsoft updates use BITS (background intelligent transfer) to only consume idle CPU and bandwidth.

There could be a new MS patch, however, that for security reasons, is unintentionally introducing delays, as it waits for a process to time-out or something. -- That's definitely possible.
My employer has an open case with Microsoft regarding their August Security Roll-up patch which seems to be causing issues with Outlook 2013 and 'autodiscover' feature. -- This doesn't affect RadioDJ but just goes to show that MS Updates can occasionally cause issues.

To everyone using Win10: You may not know, but Windows 10 uses your internet connection to share updates with others across the internet. The "featurre" has a nice name - WUDO (Windows Update Delivery Optimization).
Luckily, WUDO can be disabled and the nextweb article describes how.

We disabled that on the first day of using W10 so that's not causing our slow downs and random freezes.

There's something else not right somewhere within the OS.

I guess these issues could be hardware or hardware/driver combo related. My Dell XPS 14 laptop was upgraded two days after the release and I haven't seen any slowdowns so far. The only real glitch is somewhat mysterious resetting of few default user profile directories (Documents, Pictures, etc.), which was solved by disabling HomeGroup for now as that was the most likely culprit. Haven't had time to look deeper into that one and my Google-foo was useless.

My main workstation is a whole different story. Can't upgrade to 8.1 because I've relocated "Users" and "Program Files" directories to second HDD. I'm not even sure if there are any benefits to this setup considering it's drawbacks and lack of official support.
