Icecast V's Shoutcast

Something just struck me while I'm listening to a few tunes via RDJ and Shoutcast V1.

Is there any difference between a 128K stream streamed through Icecast compared to a 128K stream though shoutcast sound wise?

I'm still currently weighing up my options should shoutcast not get saved by Microsoft....

There shouldn't be a difference unless it's encoded differently,  I don't think it's worth ditching Shoutcast yet,  the only difference is the directory will go. With the likes of tune in etc the directory is somewhat redundant anyway, it's not worth having to shift all the services and change all the info in mobile apps etc

Shoutcast and Icecast servers have no affect on the sound quality of the stream.  The sound quality is affected by the bitrate,  sound file(mp3, wav, mp3, etc), and Encoder.

All encoders are not equal.

Second.   IF you are streaming 128K  Your file should be encoded at greater than 128K for improved sound Quality.

Been busy working on my mp3 collection most of my files are now 320kbps. it's a slow process having to go through all my CD's and burn them again. The hard work is worth the effort.

Since i wrote this post I've been messing around to see what sort of sound I could get with various streams and so far my ears seem to like the 64K Ogg Vorbis stream.

On top of that i have 2 128K mp3 streams 1 icecast 1 Shoutcast and they both sound fine.

Mind RadioDJ has to take some of the credit for it sounding so good just using the on-board compressor and it sounds fantastic.... Couldn't get this sort of sound quality with other automation programs.  :bash:

Have you found many flash players that work with ogg? I've contemplated trying it out but it's not compatible with my Android and iPhone apps :-(

I'm not aware of a flash player that will play .ogg I'm pretty new to icecast. Although we did get a player working with .opus i think that was JPlayer it was a bit fiddly to setup.

I listen to my ogg stream through Winamp 2.91.

Why bother with ogg if IceCast can stream anything you throw at it. Even video streams.
